CVN.13GIOVED28MARZO2013THURSDAY,MARCH28,2013 Easter in Italy Celebration of spirituality and tradition Nuove emigrazioni per sperare in un miglior futuro SIMONESCHIAVINATO A traditional Good Friday procession: the Miserere of Chieti ALESSANDRAMASTROIANNI DATEDMATERIAL-DONOTDELAY Many are the traditions and ceremonies that characterize the Easter week in Catholic Countries, from special food and recipes to the decoration of churches and religious sites. But one of the most fascinating is Good Friday, a religious observance that occurs in the lead-up to Easter Sunday and that commemorates Jesus Christs crucifixion and death. In Italy, Good Friday is known as Holy Friday (Venerd Santo). Solemn religious processions are held all over the Country, especially at night. Due to its history and religiousness, Italy has maintained a variety of rituals that can be hardly found in other countries; so if you are visiting Italy during the Easter week, you will have the chance to experience something unique anywhere you are. Solemn processions and rituals can be found all over the country Continued to page 25 Funds earmarked to give 17 cultural institutions a new touch ROME - Italy ongoing recession risks being further extended due to the political uncertainty currently clouding the eurozone's thirdlargest economy. Unemployment keep on falling, jumping to 11.7% compared with the previous month's 11.3%. Nevertheless, Italy is trying to revamp the precarious situation of its budget restrained museums and artistic treasure, showing an extra effort to help its cultural sector. Italy's Ministry of Culture (MiBAC) said this week that nearly one million euros have been earmarked to inject a touch of new life into 17 of the country's museums, galleries and archaeological sites. A total of 60 projects were sub- Italian national gallery of Modern Art in Rome mitted by publicly-funded institutions, 49 those deemed eligible by a special committee. Seventeen projects made the cut with budgets ranging from the lowest of 14,800 euros to the highest of 72,000. In the northwestern region of Piedmont, archeology will be transformed through storytelling and multimedia for the 2nd-century BC site of Libarna. Once an important Roman city situated on the 'Via Postumia', the Libarna settlement will be brought back to life by the Brera Art Gallery, that will create a website and social forum to engage those who cannot access the site. Parma's Palazzo Pilotta has been given financing of 59,655 euros to design an interactive portal and open social media accounts. In Rome, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna (GNAM) seized on 72,000 euros for more accessible and well-lit paths throughout the museum with its collection of neo-classical and modernist art. Designed by the architect Cesare Bazzani in 1881, it has the largest collection of modern art in Italy with over 5,000 paintings and sculptures. Benvenuta primavera e Buona Pasqua!
