CV • N. 14 • GIOVEDÌ 4 APRILE 2013     •     THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2013 Italy No. 1 on Americans' Travel Wish List Protagonisti italiani: quando il Belpaese fa storia nel mondo BARBARA MINAFRA Italy has more Unesco World Heritage sites than any other country in the world and is the 2013 vacation choice for Americans DATED MATERIAL - DO NOT DELAY Try to ask which country outside of the U.S. would an American choose for a vacation and the answer will be Italy. According to a survey ran by popular airfare search engine Fly.com, the Bel Paese, always among the top destinations of the travel wish list, is the 2013 top vacation choice for Americans. Why do Americans love Italy? Reports from travelers to this land of high culture, wonderful art and colorful history say that there are plenty of reasons to make the journey, the least of which is probably the fact that Italy has the best food in the world as well as one of the world's most beautiful languages and warmest people. Furthermore, with 44 sites, Italy has more Unesco World Heritage sites than any other country on earth. Its great città d'arte (cities of art), like Rome, Venice and Florence have been attracting visitors for centuries. Italian cities of art have been attracting visitors for centuries Continued to page 15 Italians vowed to keep costs low on Easter weekend ROME - Even though the saying goes 'Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi' or 'Christmas with the family, Easter with whom you like,' most Italians generally end up spending the Sunday celebrating the resurrection of Christ (and Spring) eating large and lavish meals together with their families. This year, even more so said consumer groups. Overturning the Spring break habit of taking a week off to go skiing or on a family holiday, day trips to local art cities or religious sites or to visit friends or family saw a boom this year as Italians look to cut back on overnight stays. Indeed traditional holidays saw a 20% drop and restaurant meals fell by 3%, Coldiretti said. The Colomba purchases have also dropped 7% this year At the end, over 70% of Italians remained at home this Easter as the economic crisis, as well as cold and wet weather continues to bite. And among those who were still planning to get away, about 17% were intending to do nothing more than go for the traditional Monday picnic, the farmer's association Coldiretti said. Only 12% were headed for the seaside and about 8% were going to the mountains. Even for those who spent the holiday at home, tables were lighter, as well. The traditional 'piece de resistance' of the meal that can last for hours, roast suckling lamb, was missing from many tables. Continued to page 15 "Spaghetti, pizza e mandolino".
