THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2022 www.italoamericano.org L'Italo-Americano 2 W e can learn a l o t f r o m h i s t o r y . These days' incredible heat clearly demonstrates that climate change is an undeni- able reality: it isn't going to h a p p e n , i t ' s h a p p e n i n g already. We no longer need Greta, we have the Marmola- d a g l a c i e r a n d i t s d e a d l y , unexpected collapse. We don't need Cop26's deadlines, we have Miami, forced to rise the streets' level because they're sinking. From California to Europe, in this scorching hot summer, we realize water is precious, just like caring for the environ- ment is. If woods and forests were kept properly, as it used to be, many of the fires that have been destroying Mariposa County and Yosemite Park, as well as the Carso and the Maremma, could have been avoided. Native Americans, just like Italian farmers, used controlled fires – or pratiche tagli- afuoco, as we'd say – to create ditches that could, in case of necessity, contain the spreading of fires. When land was the most important of resources, in California just like in Italy, fields were periodically freed from undergrowth, brush, and fallen trees to protect the territory from the risk of fires when A trip to the Costiera Amalfitana between beauty, lemons and ideas to save the world From the Editor the temperature rose. When land was a primary means of survival, it was modeled to make all environments, even the most unwelcoming and unhealthy, productive and habitable. We are talking about engineering feats so perfect they have become, in fact, a thing of Beauty. You know those enchanting images of Positano, with a thousand little houses perched on a cliff and the crystal-clear waters of the Costiera Amalfitana down below? Well, that unrivaled mix between natural beauty and architectural magic, its perfect merging into the sea, so perfect in fact, to be more like a painting than a real place, comes from human ingenuity. It's an intelligent construction, a practical – and charming – demonstration of the perfect balance we can reach when we respect nature. These are the reasons that made the Costiera Amalfitana part of the UNESCO Heritage: behind its exceptional land- scape, we find a respectful relationship between the land and the activities of Humankind. We find terraces and stepped paths that made the hillside habitable. We have trellises to grow vegetables, where the soil couldn't bear any fruit with- out human intervention, and above all, we have an intelli- gent system of canals and tanks to bring water to people and gardens. Nothing was left to chance, everything was func- tional to a circular economy. From a visit to Campania we can learn more than we think, then. Of course, it'd be a relaxing and pleasant vacation, but also a moment of discov- ery and environmental culture. This year, L'Italo-Americano wants to give you the amazing, unmissable opportunity to visit Positano and Amalfi, but also Naples, Sorrento, Capri and Pompeii. You only need 12 dollars to take part in The Amalfi Coast Experience, eight incredible days in one of the most mes- merizing, beloved, and deeply Italian corners in our country: think of the scent of pizza and Naples, think about its gulf and the bright, fragrant yellow of the most delicious lemons. There is more because by taking part in our sweepstake, you'll also support L'Italo-Americano, enabling us to keep access to our website - with all its articles about the Bel- paese's beauty and culture – free. But above all, you'll get the chance to win an unforgettable trip straight into the Grande Bellezza. The Amalfi Coast Experience will bring you to Sor- rento, where you'll dine at the Ristorante-Museo Caruso, and to Capri, where you'll discover the natural beauty of the Grotta Azzurra. You will also experience first-hand the terraced hills of Positano, the pearl of the Amalfi Coast, and the many scalinatelle that lead from the town to the sea. In Amalfi, you'll have lunch in a traditional restaurant and enjoy some fragrant limoncello and mouthwatering desserts: just what you'll need before discovering the Chiostro del Paradiso and Villa Rufolo, a true jewel of the area. And what about some trekking in the Valle delle Ferriere, a place like no other, filled and embraced as it is by the scents and colors of lemons. Then, there is Vietri sul Mare with its pottery and, finally, a visit to the most mysterious and incredible of all places, Pompeii, the last stop in The Amalfi Coast Experience. You can have all this for only 12 dollars! Just go to our website, www.italoamericano.org or visit the dedicated page at https://italoamericano.rallyup.com/amalfi/Campaign/De tails to find out how simple it is to participate! Needless to say, the more tickets you buy, the higher your chances of winning this incredible holiday.
