After being the fifth European country to ratify the EU Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women, two weeks ago the Italian Government led by Prime Minister Enrico Letta approved In the first semester of 2013 were killed 81 women in Italy. "Zapatos rojos" is an art project to raise public awareness against feminicide (Ph. And unfortunately Italy isn't an exception, even if it is still one of Continued on page 15 Italian researchers find the biggest magnetic field in the cosmos The most powerful magnetic field ever observed is located 6,500 light years from Earth's solar system in the Milky Way. The groundbreaking research was made by Italian scientists using the European Space Agency's Xmm Newton Space Telescope. Astronomers estimate that it produces a magnetic field around 20 trillion times stronger than a standard refrigerator door magnet. The study marks the first time humans have directly witnessed the cosmic phenomenon known as magnetar (the dead core of a once massive star that has collapsed in on itself): a neutron star with an extremely powerful magnetic field. A magnetar and Andrea Tiengo, researcher at Pavia University With a mass greater than that of the Sun, magnetars are typically around 20 kilometers in diameter. Normally, this kind of interior's substance would have a mass of over 100 million tons. Unlike typical neutron stars, magnetars rotate slowly, completing a rotation once every one to 10 seconds as opposed to less than one second for an average neutron star. Its resulting magnetic field generates very intense bursts of X-rays and gamma rays, with a very short active life of roughly 10,000 years. L'emergenza dei migranti che arrivano sulle coste nazionali, e che spesso raggiunge picchi di effettiva ingestibilità nonostate gli ormai vent'anni e più di esperienza in sbarchi e accoglienza, non è un problema italiano ma europeo. La gestione della "frontiera umanitaria" deve essere considerata comune all'intera Ue. In fin dei conti, oltre 28mila arrivi (leggete pagina 3) in un anno non sono né pochi né facili da gestire. Purtroppo l'Italia, nelle scorse settimane è salita ai disonori delle cronache internazionali per gli insulti al ministro dell'Integrazione Cecile Kyenge, congolese naturalizzata italiana: il colore della pelle per qualcuno evidentemente è ancora un problema, quando invece per tutti gli italiani dovrebbe esserlo solo la scarsa intelligenza di certe persone. Gli attacchi sono stati debitamente e meritatamente ripresi dall'Ue che ha puntato il dito contro commenti ''razzisti incredibilmente offensivi e ingiustificabili''. Ci sono atti però che riscattano l'orgogli collettivo, che fanno sentire orgogliosi di appartenere a questo Paese. Sulla spiaggia siciliana di Morghella a Pachino, in provincia di Siracusa, è sbarcata la solita carretta del mare. A bordo 160 migranti. I bagnanti non sono stati a guardare: si sono tuffati per aiutarli a raggiungere la riva formando una catena umana. E l'immagine dei villeggianti che si affannano per evitare l'ennesima tragedia del mare (appena pochi giorni prima, sempre in Sicilia, erano annegati altri migranti ad appena 15 metri dalla riva) ha fatto il giro del mondo. Il Los Angeles Times ha scelto di dedicare la foto del giorno a questo gesto di accoglienza che si è meritato l'encomio del Presidente della Repubblica: "Fanno onore all'Italia. Perché - ha detto Napolitano - mostrano come di fronte alla tragedia prevalga negli italiani un senso di umanità e solidarietà più forte di ogni pregiudizio e paura".
