Indeed, a great number of cinema lovers and professionals gathered there January 3 through 14 for the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival, to enjoy some of the best movies of the year 2013 and to attend exclusive galas hosting artistic delegations from all over the world. In Las Vegas brands, markets and economies converge in what is far more than a trade-show: it is where there are more opportunities than ever to connect with those who matter in innovation and technologies. Only ten Italian exhibitors attended the fair. Very few if we consider that France was there with 74 firms, Germany with 40, Sweden with 15, Switzerland with 13 and Holland with 12. High technology devices mini drone at International Ces 2014 One of the biggest Italian firms in Las Vegas was Technogym. They showcased the first Google glass controlled treadmill. CES attendees had the opportunity to interact with Technogym's new ARTIS treadmill using Google Glasses, thanks to Unity. Thanks to new UNITY technology, the android-based console display platform for cardio training equipment, Technogym equipment is open to any app or third party device. The features are designed to provide each user with a fully personalized experience on their personal training Continued on page 15 Hollywood è rimasta incantata da "La grande bellezza" di Roma, dell'Italia e di Paolo Sorrentino. Il regista dice che non se lo aspettava, ma conquistando il Golden Globe come miglior film straniero ha fatto un passo decisivo verso la candidatura agli Oscar. Il nostro Paese non ne vinceva uno dal 1989, quando se lo aggiudicò il mondo poetico di "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" del siciliano Giuseppe Tornatore. Forse il cinema italiano può tornare a credere con fiducia nelle sue potenzialità, riscattarsi. "Grazie Italia - ha detto lo sceneggiatore e attore napoletano Sorrentino - Questo è davvero un Paese pazzo, ma bellissimo". Il ritratto che "La grande bellezza" offre del Belpaese, decadente e frivolo, con una umanità mondana e superficiale, che si muove sullo sfondo delle incantevoli piazze e fontane, delle vie del centro e dei ponti sul lungo Tevere, offre un contrasto stridente tra il passato nobile e il presente mediocre. Il New York Times ha parlato del film in termini molto lusinghieri definendolo "una metafora del declino italiano". Un ritratto pungente della società e un santuario di incanto monumentale: proprio il contrasto stridente dà il senso al film. Un film che racconta anche di quanta differenza ci possa essere tra quel che si pensa sia l'Italia e quel che è. Un po' com'è il sogno americano. L'idea che ciascuno ha di un mondo lontano che sarebbe capace di assecondare le proprie ambizioni e migliorare le condizioni di vita, ma che spesso non è altro che un sogno letterario, che magari si infrange contro una realtà ben diversa. Un mito che può farsi umano, come in un'intervista ai divi hollywoodiani, ma che incontrandoli li ridimensiona o li racconta per quello che sono stati (leggete il Focus di pagina 5). Il racconto e la realtà. Un'occasione di riflessione che L'Italo Americano propone in questo numero del giornale.
