San Diego Italian Community Section Returns
ANDREW BAGLEY
Benvenuto San Diego e ben tornato! Welcome San Diego and
welcome back to the L'ItaloAmericano Italian Community
section where we are particularly
The skyline view of San Diego
excited to have your dedicated
section back in print.
Community is a vital and
important value to Italians. With
the addition of San Diego, the
Golden State is now complete
with the trifecta of major cities on
our West coast being represented
in
the
L'Italohere
Americano which consist of Los
Angeles, San Francisco, and San
Diego.
Primarily, our focus will be
contemporary Italian. Certainly,
we will recognize and appreciate
the past of humble beginnings,
however, our focus will be present day Italian with current happenings that can be found in and
around the entire San Diego
County community.
We are confident you will
enjoy reading current stories of
prominent Italian-Americans and
their heritage with relevant and
exciting news.
Although it is difficult to ascer-
San Diego's Little Italy
tain how many actual Italians
live in San Diego, according to
AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani
Residenti all'Estero), the
number registered is approxi-
mately 3,550 while approximately 7,000 Italians of Italian descent
live in San Diego County.
Unlike other major cities, San
Diego actually lacks a historical
Italian center; a focal point or
gathering post. Sure, there are
bits and pieces of history here
and there, but unfortunately they
are mainly fragmented and at best
isolated. With the recent redevelopment of the downtown core
area in past years, Little Italy has
experienced a tremendous resurgence in concentrated growth and
lays claim to having the largest
Italian community in the county.
As the pages of our local section begin to unfold, we will
begin to identify and become
more aware of the numerous
Italian-American organizations
that exist, as well as covering
events located in and around the
county so you can learn more and
perhaps get involved.
The San Diego section will
print once every two weeks. If
you think you have an interesting
story, event, know of someone, or
something of interest, or would
like to advertise, please contact us
at andrew@italoamericano.com.
