L'Italo-Americano THURS DAY, APRIL 25, 2013 PAGE 17 Gian Lorenzo Bernini: Michelangelo of the Baroque The Leonardo da Vinci Society, in association with Humanities West, presents an illustrated lecture featuring Michael Stehr, art historian and artist, focused on the wonderful works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini: Michelangelo of the Baroque. Last Wednesday, April 24, the artistic event was hosted at The Commonwealth Club of California, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco. The illustrated lecture was sold out, as many attendees gathered at the location of SF Club Office for a networking reception, followed by the talk of Program Organizer George Hammond who introduced the main speaker of the night. Michael Stehr discussed how Gian Lorenzo Bernini used his immense talents as an architect, painter, and sculptor to define the unique visual style of the Baroque Age. Bernini, and his collaborators and rivals, accomplished their makeover of Rome by successfully pursuing the patronage of Popes, who dipped into the wealth of the resurgent Counter-Reformation Church to restore the monumental grandeur of the Eternal City. The speaker of the month chosen by the Leonardo Da Vinci Society, Michael Stehr, received his degree in Art History from Stanford University in 1991 with a focus on Michelangelo and interior church decoration in the age of the Baroque. Over the years Michael has given lectures on art history all over the Bay Area, and, impelled by his passion for Art History, has since 2000 led small group tours exploring the artistic treasures of Rome and Paris.
