L'Italo-Americano THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2021 www.italoamericano.org 6 NEWS & FEATURES TOP STORIES PEOPLE EVENTS Ambrosian one. Milanese are very, very fond of their f a m o u s p a t r o n s a i n t a n d Doctor of the Church, Saint Ambrose, so much so they f o l l o w h i s o w n l i t u r g i c a l calendar, which is a bit dif- ferent from the one used in t h e r e s t o f t h e c o u n t r y . Among other things, it also affects the date of the begin- ning of Lent, which starts on t h e S u n d a y a f t e r A s h Wednesday: this means that Carnevale lasts a bunch of days more. According to popular tra- dition, dates of the Roman and Ambrosian Rites don't match because of Ambrose himself, who once left Milan for a pilgrimage, promising his people to return in time to celebrate solemnly the rites for the beginning of Lent. The bishop, however, was delayed and so the city d e c i d e d t o p o s t p o n e t h e whole thing until his return. A n o t h e r v e r s i o n o f t h e legend says it was Ambrose himself to ask the Milanese to protract Carnevale until the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday, so that he could officiate the liturgy of the f i r s t d a y o f L e n t o n c e h e returned. Reality is, however, sligh- tly different. In truth, Lent u s e d t o s t a r t o n t h e f i r s t S u n d a y a f t e r A s h Wednesday everywhere, but the Roman Church, whose rite was to become predomi- nant, decided at some stage it wanted Lent to last exactly forty days, just like the time J e s u s s p e n t f a s t i n g a n d meditating in the desert: hence the earlier beginning and subsequent shortening of Carnevale. That's why in Milan the climax of all Carnevale cele- brations is not on Martedì Grasso, but on the following Saturday. And after this impromptu history lesson — for which I hope our readers will forgive m e , i f t h e y a r e n o t t h e history-loving types — let's get to the knitty-gritty of this year's peculiar celebra- t i o n s , a l l c a r r i e d o u t , o f course, in respect of social distancing and safety mea- sures. I n t h e h o p e t h a t , t h i s time next year, we'll all be able to parade, celebrate, dress up and eat chiacchiere in street, shoulder to shoul- der, again. Venezia goes fully online Since the end of the 16th century, Venice has been celebrating Carnevale in the most luxurious, decadent, rich manner. Its costumes and masks are perfect works of art and an aura of time- less mystery surrounds the lagoon during the event. Do y o u k n o w w h y i n t h e Serenissima Carnevale is so incredibly scenic and thea- trical? Well, because during the Renaissance Carnevale coincided with the begin- ning of the theater season, a m o m e n t h o n o r e d w i t h plenty of masked balls. This year, of course, the calli and palaces of Venice c o u l d n ' t b e f i l l e d w i t h masqueraded people, so the feast moved fully online.
