want. Let's face it, when we
think of things to do and
places to visit in Italy, it's
easy to get overwhelmed by
c h o i c e . S o m u c h s o , w e
often forget our beloved
s t i v a l e i s a l s o h o m e t o
some of the largest - and
most beautiful! - lakes in
continental Europe, and
that they are an amazing
place to visit, especially
this time of the year.
If your expression right
n o w i s o n e o f s u r p r i s e ,
you're forgiven: I live in
Italy and I, alas, felt the
same when I came across
a n a r t i c l e b y O l i v e r
Smith, recently published
by The Telegraph online,
entirely dedicated to why
our lakes are so precious.
We are so busy focusing on
the sea and the mountains,
t h e C o l o s s e u m a n d
gondolas, that we forget
about all the rest. Mind,
t h i s d o e s n ' t m e a n t h e y
a r e n ' t a m o n g t h e b e s t
holiday destinations out
there and that people don't
know it: data show that our
G r a n d i L a g h i ( f r o m
West to East: Maggiore,
Como, Iseo, and Garda)
are, during the summer,
v i s i t e d b y t h e s a m e
number of tourists visiting
o u r c a p i t a l , R o m e ,
throughout the year.
The summer, however,
i s n o t t h e o n l y - a n d
perhaps not even the best -
s e a s o n a t r i p t o I t a l y ' s
l a k e s c a n t u r n i n t o t h e
perfect, relaxing vacation:
indeed, some believe the
m o n t h s o f O c t o b e r a n d
N o v e m b e r , t h e f a l l , a r e
even better than the hot,
c o n g e s t e d s u m m e r
months.
Before discovering the
beauty of our lakes, a bit of
geography may be needed.
