After participating in the 2020 edition, where it p r e s e n t e d C u r s o r X , t h e c o n c e p t o f P o w e r S o u r c e 4.0, this year FPT Industrial has dedicated its exhibition space to the range of prod- ucts with which it intends to respond to the challenges of sustainability in transport, energy, and the reduction of C O 2 e m i s s i o n s . W e a t L'Italo-Americano talked about it with Davide De Silvio, sales director of FPT I n d u s t r i a l , a n d D a n i e l e Pozzo, Product Marketing Manager of FPT Industrial, w h o f l e w t o t h e U n i t e d States for the occasion. W h a t e x a c t l y d o e s FPT Industrial do? FPT is a CNH Industrial group company dedicated to the design, production, and sale of propulsion systems. The company employs more than 8,000 people world- wide in ten factories and s e v e n R e s e a r c h a n d Development Centers. The FPT Industrial sales net- work is made up of 73 deal- ers and around 800 service centers in around 100 coun- tries. FPT Industrial has a range of natural gas engines for industrial applications. What did you present at CES 2022? The new 200 m2 stand is s t r u c t u r e d i n f o u r "Innovation Areas." In each o f t h e s e , t e c h n o l o g i c a l l y advanced solutions are pre- s e n t e d f o r a s u s t a i n a b l e energy transition in the var- ious business segments of t h e c o m p a n y : p r o p u l s i o n systems and engines for on- road, off-road, marine, and power generation applica- tions. T h i s y e a r y o u a l s o p r e s e n t e d t h e p r o j e c t resulting from the col- l a b o r a t i o n w i t h Microvast, a Texan com- pany leader in the mar- ket of ultra-fast charg- ing long-lasting battery s y s t e m s . W h a t i s i t about? FPT Industrial has start- ed the in-house design and production of battery packs. The 37 kWh model present- ed at CES 2022 is the com- pact version for light com- m e r c i a l v e h i c l e s a n d minibus applications, with an optional multipack for all passenger and freight trans- p o r t m i s s i o n s . F P T Industrial's commitment to d e v e l o p i n g h i g h - p e r f o r - mance and reliable electrifi- cation solutions is support- ed by the range of advanced battery management sys- tems, customized to maxi- mize battery life based on m i s s i o n r e q u i r e m e n t s , thanks to the acquisition of Potenza Technology. T h e p a r t i c u l a r i t y o f t h i s y e a r , h o w e v e r , i s t h e p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h F o n t a n a f r e d d a , a h i s - t o r i c w i n e r y i n t h e Langhe (Piedmont), for w h a t h a s b e e n c a l l e d " T h e E n g i n e O f T h e Year." How did this col- laboration develop? The collaboration with Fontanafredda aims to pro- mote the cultivation of a low e n v i r o n m e n t a l i m p a c t B a r o l o c r u t h a n k s t o a n innovative and 100% sus- t a i n a b l e t r a c t o r c o n c e p t , e q u i p p e d w i t h t h e F P T Industrial F28 Natural Gas engine. The first prototype o f t h e N e w H o l l a n d T K Methane Power biomethane tracked tractor was deliv- ered to Fontanafredda in 2021. Powered by the bio- m e t h a n e F 2 8 N G e n g i n e , the crawler tractor allows for zero CO2 emissions in the vineyard, and is the first to be used in the production of a Barolo cru, marking an i m p o r t a n t s t e p f o r w a r d towards sustainable wine production and represent- ing a ready-now solution for energy transition in agricul- ture. The three-year part- n e r s h i p b e t w e e n F P T Industrial, New Holland, and Fontanafredda is sup- p o r t e d b y t h e R e g i o n o f Piedmont, which finances the collaboration between F P T I n d u s t r i a l a n d l o c a l c o m p a n i e s a s p a r t o f t h e Tobias Project, an acronym for biomethane traction for the circular economy in spe- cialized agriculture. W h a t i s t h e g o a l o f this project? T h e g o a l i s t o c r e a t e a sustainable circular econo- m y c a p a b l e o f a c h i e v i n g net-zero carbon emissions, a n d e n a b l i n g f a r m e r s t o a c h i e v e e n e r g y i n d e p e n - dence from fossil fuels. It also wants to generate addi- t i o n a l s t r e a m s o f i n c o m e from the sale of surplus bio- methane. FPT Industrial's partner for this project is Bennamann Ltd., a British a g r i c u l t u r a l t e c h n o l o g y company projected towards rapid growth in the clean energy sector through the supply and production of b i o m e t h a n e f r o m z e r o - emission organic waste. What about the news r e g a r d i n g m a r i n e propulsion? This is the starting point of the collaboration between F P T I n d u s t r i a l a n d t h e I t a l i a n s t a r t - u p S e a l e n c e with which, at CES 2022, we presented a totally new and extremely innovative hybrid electric powertrain for commercial and plea- sure boats. We are talking about an electric hydro-jet, d e s i g n e d l i k e j e t e n g i n e s intended for the aeronauti- cal sector, which, thanks to an electric unit, sucks the water in the front part of the hull and expels it in the back, generating a thrust that makes the boat move forward. The solution pro- posed by the two companies n o t o n l y g u a r a n t e e s a reduction in consumption c o m p a r e d t o p r o p e l l e r propulsion systems but also allows you to increase the space on board and opti- mize boat design, thanks to the absence of bulky axles and transmissions. The two companies are also working on the development of new batteries which, thanks to cutting-edge filling technol- o g y , b e c o m e t o t a l l y f i r e - proof and safer.
