T h e redesign was a commercial success, with over a million units sold by 2012. In 2020, Fiat further modernized the 500 with the introduction of t h e f u l l y e l e c t r i c 5 0 0 e , blending the car's classic d e s i g n w i t h c u t t i n g - e d g e technology: it features an 87 kW electric motor and a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery, positioning it as a leader in the era of electric vehicles. As we are celebrating the 500's 67th birthday, Fiat continues to innovate, with a new hybrid model based on the 500e to be released between late 2025 and early 2026: crucially, the model will be produced in Turin, the original home of FIAT and 500, to ensure the lega- cy of the car endures. Our beloved 500 is a true sym- bol of the country: it stands for the period of innovation and optimism in post-war b o o s t i n g i t s t o p s p e e d t o 140 km/h while improving stability and cooling with f l a r e d a r c h e s . T h e F i a t Abarth 695 SS, introduced i n 1 9 6 6 , w a s a n o t a b l e model from this collabora- t i o n . D e s p i t e o n l y 1 , 0 0 0 u n i t s b e i n g p r o d u c e d , i t r e m a i n s a h i g h l y s o u g h t - after collector's item today. But, as it often happens, all good things must come to an end, and production of t h e F i a t 5 0 0 c e a s e d i n August 1975 after nearly 4 million units were built over 18 years. The final Cinque- cento rolled off the assem- bly line in Palermo, Sicily. It was succeeded by the Fiat 126, which never quite cap- t u r e d t h e s a m e a f f e c t i o n from European drivers. The Fiat 500's influence, however, extended beyond i t s p r o d u c t i o n y e a r s , b e c o m i n g a c u l t u r a l i c o n and a piece of engineering t h a t d e f i n e d a n e r a . S o much so, in fact, that Fiat decided to take the model out of retirement in 2007, t o c e l e b r a t e i t s 5 0 t h Italy, when it also embodied the principles of mid-centu- ry modern design with its functional appearance and economical use of materials. Its influence helped unite Europe, offering freedom of movement and accessibility. A s i t c e l e b r a t e s i t s 6 7 t h anniversary, the Fiat 500 r e m a i n s a b e l o v e d i c o n , continuously evolving while retaining its classic charm. When you think of it, the Fiat 500 is so much more than a car, it's a piece of Italian history and culture. From its inception in the 1950s, during Italy's eco- nomic boom, to its status as a design icon in the MoMA, this little compact car made in Turin has always stood out. Today, with its recent electric and hybrid versions, F I A T 5 0 0 c o n t i n u e s t o evolve, but without losing any of its original charm. Whether on the streets of Italy and the world or on display at MoMA, the Fiat 500 will always be instantly r e c o g n i z a b l e a n d f o r e v e r iconic. N u o v a 5 0 0 , w h i c h m e a - sured just over 2.9 meters in length, making it an ideal city car. This original design w a s p o w e r e d b y a 4 7 9 c c two-cylinder engine, which p r o d u c e d a m o d e s t 1 3 horsepower, but the appeal- ing looks, reduced size, and small price tag made 500 immediately popular. Vari- ous adaptations and spin- offs were born, relatively quickly: in 1958, the Nuova 500 Sport was introduced, w i t h a n i n c r e a s e d 2 1 . 5 h o r s e p o w e r . T h i s m o d e l w a s e s p e c i a l l y c o o l , a s i t featured a distinctive cream color body with a red racing stripe. Several other ver- s i o n s , i n c l u d i n g t h e 5 0 0 Giardiniera station wagon in 1960 and the Fiat 500 F in 1965, which was known for its controversial rear- hinged doors, followed. I n t h e 1 9 6 0 s , K a r l Abarth, an Austrian-born d e s i g n e r w h o b e c a m e a n Italian citizen, began modi- fying the Fiat 500: by 1964, he had enhanced the car's performance significantly, J uly 4th, for all of u s , i s I n d e p e n - dence Day, but it a l s o m a r k s a n i m p o r t a n t m i l e - stone in automotive history: the debut of the Fiat 500. I n t r o d u c e d i n 1 9 5 7 , t h i s compact car became a true symbol of Italian post-war m o t o r i n g a n d o f t h e e c o - nomic boom. During the late 1950s and 1960s, Italy expe- r i e n c e d r a p i d e c o n o m i c growth, often referred to as the "Italian economic mira- cle." The Fiat 500 played a significant role in this trans- formation, providing afford- able and reliable transporta- tion to a burgeoning middle class and symbolizing the n e w f o u n d p r o s p e r i t y a n d mobility of the Italian peo- ple. Recognizable and iconic in design and looks, if it's tr ue that in 2017, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York added a 1968 Fiat 500F to its per- manent collection, an inclu- sion that underscores the car's inimitable looks and its impact on 20th-century cul- ture and industrial design. As we said, it all started shortly after the end of the War, a challenging time for t h e c o u n t r y . I n t h e e a r l y 1950s, Italy was recovering f r o m t h e d e v a s t a t i o n o f World War II and the nation needed an affordable, prac- t i c a l c a r f o r t h e m a s s e s . E n t e r D a n t e G i a c o s a , a designer at Fiat, who began w o r k i n g o n w h a t w o u l d b e c o m e t h e F i a t 5 0 0 : t h e car's design focused on sim- p l i c i t y , w i t h a n a p p r o a c h similar to that used by Alec Issigonis to create the MINI i n t h e U K . G i a c o s a ' s g o a l was to create a small, cost- effective vehicle that would m e e t t h e n e e d s o f I t a l i a n families.
