It is commonly used to pre- sent alternatives or choices within a sentenc, and it is often used interchangeably with the simpler conjunction o. Oppure, however, can add emphasis or clarity, especial- l y w h e n d i s t i n g u i s h i n g between options. L e t u s t a k e t h e s e s e n - tences as an example: Vuoi il caffè o il tè? and Vuoi il caffè oppure il tè? Both of them translate in English as "Do you want coffee or tea," but in Italian there is a slight dif- ference between the two. In the first sentence, o presents a s t r a i g h t f o r w a r d c h o i c e , while in the second, oppure adds a slight emphasis on the distinction between the two options. B a s i c a l l y , o p p u r e i s a stronger and more emphatic form of the simple conjunc- tion o, and often carries a stronger disjunctive mean- ing. It is particularly useful when presenting clearly dis- tinct alternatives or empha- sizing a consequence. Let us look at this sen- tence: Lo compri subito, o p p u r e v u o i r i p e n s a r c i ? ("Will you buy it now, or do you want to think it over?"): 1 voices 3 (I) pay 7 of the 8 skies 9 (we) pull 13 west 15 gold 16 (you/voi) give 17 sun Using the provided meanings as clues, search for the appropriate Italian word in the grid 1 (I) see 2 kicks 4 bee 5 hatred 6 written 10 (I) move 11 north 12 nine 14 east in this case, oppure empha- sizes the contrast between the two options, making the choice clearer. But check out this phrase instead: Dovrà smettere di dare fastidio, oppure se ne pentirà ("He w i l l h a v e t o s t o p b e i n g annoying, otherwise he will r e g r e t i t " ) . H e r e , o p p u r e introduces a warning or con- sequence and takes on the meaning of "otherwise" or "if not," signaling a conse- quence if a certain condition is not met.
