I f y o u have spent any time a r o u n d I t a l i a n s – e s p e c i a l l y i n moments of surprise, exas- peration, or even gossip – you have probably heard the word oddio (ohd-dee-oh), a short, sharp, and expressive a d v e r b , w h i c h t r a n s l a t e s , quite literally, to "Oh God!" But as is often the case with everyday Italian expres- sions, its use is more com- plex than it seems at first glance. Etymologically, oddio is a c o n t r a c t i o n o f " O h D i o , " meaning exactly what it says: oh God. The exclamation is common across many lan- guages (Oh my God! in Eng- lish, ¡Dios mío! in Spanish; mon Dieu in French), but in Italian, it carries sometimes a more dramatic flair. Oddio is incredibly versa- tile. It can express panic: Oddio, ho dimenticato le chi- avi! ("Oh God, I forgot the keys!"); but it can also be used for surprise, both posi- tive and negative (Oddio, che bella notizia! – "Oh wow, what great news!;" Oddio, che orrore! – "Oh God, how awful!"). It is considered too casual and can come across as overly emotional or even unprofes- s i o n a l i n t h o s e e n v i r o n - ments. Remember that oddio is used without any religious intent: while the word tech- nically invokes God, in most cases it functions as a secu- lar exclamation.
