L'Italo-Americano THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 2026 www.italoamericano.org 6 NEWS & FEATURES TOP STORIES PEOPLE EVENTS under X-ray. He broke reali- ty down to understand it, s t u d y i n g e v e r y d e t a i l a n d function to uncover hidden m e c h a n i s m s , t h e n r e c o n - structing and reinterpreting them. This approach stands in stark contrast to that of many contemporary muse- um visitors, who, according to various studies, spend on average less than 33 seconds in front of an artwork, often just enough time to take a photo for social media. Leonardo also represents the relationship between art and technology. His works, such as the Mona Lisa, are not only aesthetic master- p i e c e s b u t t h e r e s u l t o f extensive studies in light, anatomy, and perspective. This dialogue between cre- ativity and technique now lies at the heart of fields such as industrial design, virtual reality, and artificial intelli- gence. But perhaps above all, his figure offers an educa- tional model: in a rapidly changing world, he embodies t h e v a l u e o f c o n t i n u o u s l e a r n i n g a n d i n t e l l e c t u a l f l e x i b i l i t y ; h i s m e t h o d r e m a i n s r e l e v a n t t o d a y , especially in advanced tech- n o l o g y a n d s c i e n t i f i c research, where the ability to connect different fields is increasingly essential. It is not simply about accumulat- i n g k n o w l e d g e , b u t a b o u t l i n k i n g i t , j u s t a s h e d i d . Interdisciplinarity was, indeed, one of his most strik- ing innovations. These ideas and methods a l s o u n d e r p i n a n o t h e r important occasion: Made in Italy Day, dedicated to promoting the country's pro- d u c t i v e e x c e l l e n c e . F r o m c r a f t s m a n s h i p t o d e s i g n , from fashion to technology, Made in Italy represents a heritage of skills rooted in that same tradition of inge- nuity and beauty embodied b y L e o n a r d o . T h i s y e a r ' s theme, Young Skills for Made in Italy, will involve s c h o o l s , b u s i n e s s e s , a n d institutions in celebrating craftsmanship, quality, and innovation, to bridge the gap b e t w e e n e d u c a t i o n a n d industry needs. N e a r l y 8 0 0 e v e n t s w i l l take place across the coun- try. In just two years, the initiative has significantly expanded: from 350 events in its first edition in 2024, focused on identity, to 550 in 2025, centered on tech- n o l o g y , a n d n o w a n e v e n broader program running until May 10. It will offer a w i d e r a n g e o f i n i t i a t i v e s showing the diversity and v i t a l i t y o f M a d e i n I t a l y : from open days in over 150 companies and workshops, custodians of artisanal and industrial expertise, to 350 public events including con- ferences and live demon- s t r a t i o n s , a l o n g s i d e 5 0 immersive exhibitions cele- brating both historical her- itage and cutting-edge inno- vation, and 65 educational events for students and pro- fessionals. The program spans the entire production system, with a focus on the "5 A's" i d e n t i f i e d i n t h e W h i t e P a p e r M a d e i n I t a l y 2030: Agro-food, Appar- el, Furniture (arredo), Automation, and Auto- motive. These are comple- mented by emerging sectors such as the health economy, space and defense, the blue economy and shipbuilding, tourism and leisure, and cul- tural and creative industries. "National Made in Italy Day celebrates our calling card to the world: quality, excellence, and that uniquely Italian know-how born from the meeting of local identity and innovation," said the Minister for Enterprises and M a d e i n I t a l y , A d o l f o Urso. "Its unifying theme will be education, because the strength of Made in Italy lies in skills and in the ability t o p a s s k n o w l e d g e d o w n over time. This edition will also celebrate the milestone of one thousand registered historic brands, symbols of identity, memory, and tradi- tion, but also of innovation, as they have adapted over time." This return to the "manu- al roots" of Italian excellence is closely tied to the Renais- sance genius himself: the l o g o o f t h e D a y w i l l b e L e o n a r d o ' s V i t r u v i a n Man, with the idea to keep the human being at the cen- ter of scientific and creative progress. In an age shaped by artificial intelligence, it s e r v e s a s a r e m i n d e r t o maintain a human-centered perspective in guiding inno- vation and change. April 15, bringing together these three celebrations, tells a coherent story: that of a country that continues to draw from its past in order to shape its future. Art, inge- nuity, and quality remain d e f i n i n g e l e m e n t s o f a n identity that looks forward without losing sight of its origins. The date is therefore more than a commemora- tion—it is an invitation to rediscover the value of cre- ativity and knowledge, cele- brating a legacy that contin- ues to renew itself through artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and 3D reconstruc- t i o n . W h e n a p p l i e d t o Leonardo's work, these tools allow us to reinterpret and better understand the scope of inventions conceived five hundred years ago, showing just how relevant his think- ing still is today. Artist, painter, sculptor, architect, urban planner, as well as scientist, engineer, physicist, and botanist, with research into flight, the cosmos, optics, and perspective: Leonardo combined an aesthetic eye with a deeply analytical mind CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man: a universal symbol of the balance between art and science, today it stands at the center of reflections on human creativity and innovation (Photo: Cogent/Dreamstime) Models of Leonardo da Vinci's flying machines on display at the Science and Technology Museum in Milan, showing how his ideas continue to be translated into working forms centuries later (Photo: Viktor Gladkov/Dreamstime)
