At heart, sicché is a con- junction meaning "and so," "therefore," "which is why." It is what you reach for to tie a cause to its result: non ho t r o v a t o n e s s u n o c h e m i desse una mano, sicché ho fatto tutto da solo* ("nobody would lend me a hand, and s o I d i d t h e w h o l e t h i n g myself"). Clear and logical, standard Italian uses it hap- pily this way. If we look at its spelling, we can understand more of its story: sicché was born from two older words, sì and c h e – " s o " a n d " t h a t " – which over centuries drew together and fused into one, and sì che softened into sic- ché. (That older two-word f o r m s t i l l t u r n s u p i n t h e pages of the classics, which is where it now mostly lives). 1 middle 4 he 6 (I) exit 7 bodies 8 (you/tu) warm 10 rock 13 west 14 well (accurately, competently) 16 bee 17 (I) arrive Using the provided meanings as clues, search for the appropriate Italian word in the grid 1 what; that; who 2 knuckle 3 eye 4 their 5 (he/she) starts 8 school 9 (feminine of) straight 11 skies 12 (he/she) fears 15 echo The single word is the mod- e r n o n e , a n d t h e c o r r e c t written form takes an acute accent on the close, bright *é*.
