A research center of the University of Pavia, in Northern Italy, the Applied Nuclear Energy Lab manages a nuclear reactor, a cyclotron for the production of radioisotopes and other sources of ionizing radiation. It is at disposal of researchers of the Pavia Athenaeum and others, for public and private tests. The center, which encourages the transfer of results from the theoretical field of nuclear technologies to practical applications, has just tested "Wow". Today, in The Wow system that purify water without using filters or chemical substances Continued on page 15 Around Naples: a million people at risk from toxic pollution NAPLES - Despite heavy rain, between 30,000 and 100,000 protesters filled the roads in a long day of banner-filled marches calling for an end to camorra and pollution. Many protesters carried large photographs of their children and other relatives who had died, according to them, from cancer caused by the toxic pollution. Among the marchers was the mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris: "We come together under the banner of protest to say that the polluted areas must be cleaned up, but we do need more resources to achieve the clean-up. Yes, indeed, our anger is evident but we are full of ideas". The protest movement is calling for national funds for the decontamination of polluted lands and waters, and blaming the mafia for creating hundreds of illegal dumps in the area around Naples. The environmental organization Legambiente said that in 22 years some 440 businesses located in Central and Northern Italy have buried up to 10 million tons of industrial waste in the area. Locals call the zone between Naples and Caserta the "Land of Fires" or "Triangle of Death" due to the toxic fumes produced by burning waste. Quanto il background di provenienza influisce nella storia personale, nella carriera, nei risultati professionali e sociali? Sicuramente del "Made in" qualcosa rimane sempre appiccicato addosso. Sia perché negli anni, oltre a cambiare, spostarsi, integrarsi, evolvere, stratificarsi, si torna spesso a guardare indietro, anche per capire quanta strada è stata fatta, dove e in quale direzione si vuole andare, sia perché qualcuno o qualche circostanza ci riportano inevitabilmente al punto di partenza. Non è un caso che sui documenti di identità sia indicato il luogo di nascita. È un timbro che ci portiamo dietro per sempre. Così di Charles Paterno, che tanto incise sull'urbanistica newyorkese d'inizio Novecento, non ci si dimenticò mai delle origini italiane, lucane per la precisione, sebbene avesse passato quasi tutta la vita nel continente americano. Così si fa oggi per il futuro sindaco di New York Bill de Blasio che, pur essendo nato nella Grande Mela ed avendo solo metà del suo sangue di provenienza italiana, è comunque indissolubilmente legato alle origini tricolori (le due storie sono nel Focus di pagina 5). Così si potrebbero fare altri milioni di esempi, tanti quanti sono stati e continuano ad essere gli emigrati italiani e i loro discendenti, che si portano dietro il marchio di fabbrica. Non un'etichetta applicata su un prodotto ma un modo di essere. P.s.
