It should always be like a good plate of spaghetti" SIlVIA SIMONETTI The secret of the happy marriage between Italian cinema and food was revealed on the occasion of Movie'n'Food, a special dinner hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute on November 13, featuring an abundant and exquisite menu inspired by the movies of Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini, Ettore Scola,Giuseppe Tornatore, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, and Martin Scorsese. Besides the delicious food, the "King of Paparazzi" Rino Barillari- showing Hollywood artists enjoying "la dolce vita" in Rome - was illustrated in a special video, while photographer Fabio Lovino - who has captured "the great beauty" of movie and music stars from all over the world - presented his exhibition Portraits on view at the IIC until December 31. The event was organized by Dress in Dreams - a foundation established in 2006 and committed to promote the Italian style in different fields, from fashion to cinema -, under the auspices Kasia Smutniak, Claudia Gerini, Jasmine Trinca, Roberto Andò, Maria Sole Tognazzi, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Paolo Sorrentino. The Italian American community of Los Angeles rallies around the Gatto family in this sad moment On behalf of the Italian American community of Los Angeles, L'Italo-Americano would like to express its deepest condolences to the Gatto family on the loss of beloved Joseph Anthony Gatto. Joe will be remembered as a great educator and promoter of the arts, as well as an honest and hard-working family man, and a respected member of the community. The funeral will take place on Monday, November 25th, at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church in Los Feliz. In lieu of flowers, the family asks to consider supporting one Joseph's favorite charities and causes: The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Community Garden Council, or The Tuition Magician, Attn: Joe Gatto Arts Scholarship. Joseph Anthony Gatto was born in 1934 in Colorado. His father was an immigrant who worked for the Air Force after World War II, when his family moved to Los Angeles. After serving the United States Army, Joseph graduated from California State University, Los Angeles, and earned two Masters degrees from Pepperdine University, and Cal. State L.A. In 1968, he got married, and had three children: Nicole an epidemiologist, Michael a California Assemblyman, and Marianna the director of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles. Joe taught high school during the day, college on weekends, and in the evenings assisted his brother, a concession manager at Dodger Stadium. He was as a professor at Otis Parsons, Art Center College of Design, California State University at Northridge, and Cal. State L.A. In 1985, he co-founded the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and served as Dean of the Visual Arts Department. For his teaching acumen and dedication, Joe was awarded the "Bravo Award" as California Arts Teacher of the Year in 1986. Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush honored him at the White House in 1988 and 1989. He was honored as both the California and Pacific Region Art Educator of the year in 1990. In 2004, he was elected as a John Kerry delegate to the Democratic National Committee. He worked tirelessly for the parish Our Mother of Good Counsel, and was also a Eucharistic minister. After he retired, Joe finally pursued his passion, creating hand-crafted jewelry, and traveled the nation exhibiting it, and lecturing on art and design. Joseph Gatto is survived by his daughter Nicole and her husband Mark, son Mike and wife Danielle, daughter Marianna and fiancé Eric, grandchildren Damian Joseph, Elliana Vivienne, and Evangelina Felicity, his former wife Isolde, brothers Domenic and Frank, plus countless cousins, admiring students, and loving friends.
