Looking forward to next year's edition. Newport. The Italian Spotlight was opened by a delightful perfor- mance of soprano Lisa-Marie Stramaglia interpreting famous pieces by artists the likes of Andrea Bocelli (Con te partirò), Nino Rota (Tema d'amore), and Giacomo Puccini (O mio babbino caro). Introducing this year's edition of the event, the organizers and volunteer staff wanted to thank all the sponsors including the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian Film Commission, L'Italo-Americano newspaper, the Italian Heritage Culture Foundation, IAMLA, Fondazione Italia, We the Italians, Italia.org, and Film 4 Life. The screening of the official selection, the movie Viaggio Sola (A Five Star Life) by Italian director Maria Sole Tognazzi, was preceded by the original short movie Born Without Instructions by young Valentina Olivato, who was in attendance. It deals with the complicated rela- tionship between men and women, playing with the idea of a possible voice-over to guide them and help them understand each other's needs. Whereas, Viaggio Sola shows a woman in her for- ties who decides to live her life outside the social conventions, choosing work over family, over- coming the fear of a lonely future, and finding her own way of life. The Festival's European Showcase party was held right after the screening at Via Lido Plaza, and it featured hosted bar, top restaurants, live music enter- tainment and deejay set to cele- brate the Italian and European culture.
