The event will feature local musical star G G A m o s a n d t r e a t s f r o m Original Joe's, Mama's, Tony's Pizza Napoletana, Park Tavern, and other North Beach favorites in one of San Francisco's most iconic venues. Old timers will mix with the techie newcomers, young fami- lies will mingle with the old f a m i l i e s , a n d n e i g h b o r s a n d friends of all stripes will gather to celebrate a common cause, raising money for renovation of the Joe DiMaggio Playground, at this only-in-North-Beach night out. T h e J o e D i M a g g i o Playground in San Francisco's North Beach dates back to 1910. At that time, it was called the North Beach Playground but was renamed in 1981 for neighbor- hood hero, Joe DiMaggio. Now, in 2014, the 104 year old play- ground will be renovated with the project scheduled to begin at the end of 2014 and reopening in early 2016. What better place to celebrate and fundraise for a historic play- g r o u n d t h a n a t t h e h i s t o r i c Bimbo's 365 Club. In operation for over eight decades under the ownership of the Bimbo's fami- ly, it was originally located at 3 6 5 M a r k e t S t r e e t , w h i c h i s where the "365" originates. The name "Bimbo" evolved w h e n A g o s t i n o G i u n t o l i l e f t Tuscany, Italy in 1922, sailing to America at age 19. He worked a s a c o o k i n S a n F r a n c i s c o where his employer had difficul- ty pronouncing his name and g a v e h i m t h e n i c k n a m e o f "Bimbo", the Italian word for boy. In 1931, Agostino opened Bimbo's on Market Street mov- i n g t o C o l u m b u s A v e n u e i n 1 9 5 1 . Although much of the funding to renovate the Joe DiMaggio play- ground is in place, the opportu- nity to purchase a legacy tile will be available until December 31, 2014. F r i e n d s o f J o e D i M a g g i o Playground is partnering with other neighborhood groups to help raise $300,000 needed to make sure the playground can be used by neighbors of all ages and is ready for the next 100 years by building a commemora- tive wall around the renovated playground. Individuals are able to donate by purchasing tiles with the names of their par- ents, grandparents, children and grandchildren, their businesses and civic organizations. The band of commemorative tiles, handmade in California by Fireclay Tile, will encircle the Joe DiMaggio Playground on t h e p e r i m e t e r w a l l a l o n g G r e e n w i c h , P o w e l l a n d Lombard Streets. Donation lev- els are $300 (4" x 8" tile) and $500 (8" x 8" tile). The Friends of Joe DiMaggio Playground are working with their fiscal spon- sor, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a n d t i l e d o n a t i o n s a r e t a x deductible.
