Photo courtesy of the Ravinia Festival italoamericano.org $ 2.25 DATED MATERIAL - DO NOT DELAY James Conlon on his passion for Italian Opera F ounded in 1931 in Turin, P i e d m o n t r e g i o n , b y I t a l y ' s p u b l i c s e r v i c e broadcaster, the RAI National S y m p h o n i c O r c h e s t r a h a s absorbed the radio orchestras of Rome, Naples, and Milan, and attracted some of the best con- ductors in the world. Among them, James Conlon has recent- l y b e e n a p p o i n t e d t h e Orchestra's principal conductor, a p o s i t i o n n e v e r h e l d b y a n American before. B o r n i n N e w Y o r k C i t y , where he attended the presti- gious Juilliard School and offi- c i a l l y d e b u t e d w i t h t h e Philharmonic in 1974, in his c a r e e r C o n l o n h a s d i r e c t e d major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Europe and per- formed in the greatest opera houses worldwide, including the P a r i s N a t i o n a l O p e r a , t h e Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro a l l a S c a l a i n M i l a n , a n d t h e T e a t r o d e l l ' O p e r a i n R o m e . Since 2006, he has been music d i r e c t o r o f t h e L o s A n g e l e s Opera, also giving pre-concert lectures and working with stu- dents from the Colburn School, USC, and UCLA. Led by the idea of music as an instrument of personal as well as of social growth, he has committed to raising awareness of less known composers, who have suffered from racial or reli- gious discrimination. Thanks to his efforts in this direction, The O R E L F o u n d a t i o n a n d t h e Ziering-Conlon Initiative for R e c o v e r e d V o i c e s a t t h e Colburn School were created, and he was honored with several a w a r d s s u c h a s t h e L i f e t i m e Achievement Award from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Los A n g e l e s ( 2 0 1 0 ) , t h e M u s i c Institute of Chicago's Dushkin Award (2009), the Medal of the American Liszt Society (2008), and Italy's Premio Galileo 2000 Award in Florence (2008) for his contribution to music and peace.
