Continued on page 15 Italy confirms Nato commitments but says defense needs cuts ROME - Italian government confirmed its commitment to its operations with Nato and its involvement in the Nato-led Isaf mission in Afghanistan until the announced withdrawal of foreign forces next year. Premier Letta, who met Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary general, stressed the sense of the country's commitments to the alliance despite the crisis and Foreign Minister Bonino told Rasmussen that Italians will remain in Afghanistan also after 2014. Letta, however, said that ways had to be found to cut European defense budgets ahead of December's Eu summit, when defense Nato Secretary General Rasmussen and the President Enrico Letta will be a top issue on the European agenda. Italy will assure its military and operative support in Libia, Siria, Lebanon, Balkans, counter-piracy mission off the Horn of Africa, but defense spending needs to be reduced. Rasmussen simply replied "insecurity has too much a high cost" and Italy's commitment to the Nato alliance "is even more important at a moment in which all our member countries have to make difficult budget choices. Safety has a price but the insecurity has a cost that we cannot allow. Continued on page 15 Decisamente non è cosa che capiti tutti i giorni. Eppure la tecnologia lo consente anche a noi, comuni terresti. Il premier Enrico Letta, per venti minuti, ha potuto chiacchierare in video conferenza (qui nella foto del Laboratorio Fotografico Chigi) con un italiano d'eccellenza che sta orbitando a centinaia di chilometri (tra i 278 e i 460 km) dalla Terra: Luca Parmitano. Grazie a Parmitano, primo astronauta italiano a passeggiare nello Spazio, possiamo farlo tutti: basta collegarsi alla sua pagina Facebook per seguire la sua meravigliosa avventura. Lo stanno già facendo più di 40mila persone. "Quando torna, l'aspetto qui perché avrei tante domande da farle e se ha un posto per la prossima missione vorrei venire anch'io" ha detto Letta. Il 36enne siciliano, a bordo della Iss (made in Italy per quasi il 50%) ha replicato: "Sono orgoglioso dell'Italia in un momento in cui lo sport nazionale è parlare solo male dell'Italia. Io voglio dimostrare che c'è un'Italia giovane che ha voglia di fare". Se la leadership italiana in campo spaziale è consolidata e, come ha detto il Presidente del Consiglio, il governo "vuole investire nella ricerca e nello Spazio" nonostante la crisi imperante (leggete anche Dall'Italia a pagina 3) e se con Luca Parmitano (foto e passeggiate spaziali a pagina 5) c'è la dimostrazione pratica del livello "astrale" di eccellenza a cui il Paese può arrivare, va detto che non si tratta di casi isolati. Nel Trevigiano è andata in scena Hack Italy, la maratona dei programmatori. La visita del Ministro dello Sviluppo Economico Zanonato ha riconosciuto il valore dell'Italia che fa impresa hi-tech e crea ricchezza attraverso giovani sviluppatori e creativi tecnologici. A Firenze, invece, 4 ragazzi hanno mandato un pallone aerostatico, dotato di telecamera (video poi postato su Youtube), fino alla stratosfera (dove poi è scoppiato): un'impresa fatta in casa dopo un mese di lavoro. Come dire, può bastare poco ma serve credere nelle proprie potenzialità. Un po' il testamento lasciato in eredità dalla Signora delle Stelle Margherita Hack (pagina 5).
