L'Italo-Americano THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 2026 www.italoamericano.org 6 NEWS & FEATURES TOP STORIES PEOPLE EVENTS that it shows how the coun- t r y ' s i n v o l v e m e n t d i d n o t suddenly appear with the current crewed phase, nor does it begin only with the future construction of lunar habitats: Italy was already p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n t h e p r o - g r a m ' s f i r s t m a j o r o p e r a - t i o n a l m i l e s t o n e , p r e s e n t both in core spacecraft sys- tems and in an independent satellite mission of its own. T h a t a l o n e w o u l d b e a remarkable chapter in the country's space story, yet the horizon extends further still. The Italian Space Agency (ASI) and NASA signed an agreement for studies linked to a Multi-Purpose Habitat, a concept aimed at support- ing long-duration presence on the Moon. Subsequent s t a t e m e n t s b e t w e e n I t a l y a n d N A S A i n 2 0 2 6 r e a f - firmed cooperation in areas such as lunar habitats, com- munications systems, and scientific activity connected to sustained exploration. Much remains subject to b u d g e t s a n d t h e u s u a l uncertainties of space pro- grams, and that is true of every nation involved. Even so, Italy is clearly seeking a place in the architecture of long-term lunar presence. This is far from surprising, when taking into considera- t i o n I t a l y ' s i n d u s t r i a l strength: while the country's industrial reputation abroad is often reduced to design, f a s h i o n , f o o d , o r l u x u r y brands, the country has long maintained strong capabili- ties in aerospace, robotics, precision manufacturing, a n d a d v a n c e d s y s t e m s . Artemis is a clear reminder that modern Italy, besides worldwide-known and loved s y m b o l s o f l i f e s t y l e , a l s o produces systems built for one of the most demanding t e c h n i c a l e n v i r o n m e n t s imaginable. In a way, the viral Nutella moment mirrors this idea of t h e c o u n t r y , t h e f a m i l i a r stereotype of Italy as taste, pleasure, and recognizable brands. At the same time, though, its position as a key player in helping shape how h u m a n s m a y l i v e b e y o n d Earth is just as essential and dynamic. Once again, it isn't surprising if we think Italy was the third country, after t h e S o v i e t U n i o n a n d t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s , t o p l a c e a satellite into orbit through the San Marco program in the 1960s: its connection with space dates back more than sixty years. And then, w e a l l k n o w t h a t I t a l i a n a s t r o n a u t s h a v e f l o w n r e p e a t e d l y , a n d I t a l i a n industry contributed to the International Space Station, so Artemis does not emerge f r o m n o w h e r e ; r a t h e r , i t continues a national tradi- t i o n o f p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n major space endeavors. This relatively low-key mode of contribution may suit Italy r a t h e r w e l l b e c a u s e n o t every country needs to dom- inate headlines to be strate- gically important: some pre- f e r t o s h a p e o u t c o m e s b y supplying expertise and crit- ical technologies. So yes, the jar of Nutella floating inside Orion was a delightful moment, and it deserved the smiles it pro- duced, but if one wants to understand the true Italian connection to Artemis, it is better to look past the label on the jar and shift our gaze t o w a r d t h e s y s t e m s s u r - r o u n d i n g i t : s o m e o f t h e electricity powering Orion carries Italian know-how; some of the tracking does, too. And if Artemis proceeds a s p l a n n e d , s o m e o f t h e rooms where astronauts live in lunar orbit – and perhaps, one day, on the Moon itself – may bear the mark of Ital- ian engineering long after that jar of Nutella has been eaten. Italy is clearly seeking a place in the architecture of long-term lunar presence. This is far from surprising, given Italy's long-standing industrial strength in fields like aerospace, robotics, precision manufacturing, and advanced systems.
