It is commonly translated as "after all," "besides," "on the other hand," or "then again," depending on con- text. Italians use it to intro- duce a justification, add per- spective, soften a conclusion, or point out something that should already be obvious. T h e e x p r e s s i o n c o m e s from the phrase di altro onde, an older form mean- ing roughly "from another s i d e " o r " f r o m a n o t h e r source." In spoken Italian, d'al- tronde is common because it sounds natural and thought- ful. It can make a sentence feel less abrupt than a direct contradiction, so instead of saying "you're wrong," an Italian speaker may intro- d u c e a s o f t e r c o r r e c t i o n through d'altronde. It is also widely used in j o u r n a l i s m a n d e s s a y s , where it helps connect ideas smoothly. For example, we say: "il risultato non sor- prende; d'altronde, i segnali e r a n o c h i a r i d a t e m p o " ("The result is not surpris- ing; after all, the signs had been clear for some time").
