It is commonly translated as "after all," "besides," "on the other hand," or "then again," depending on con- text. Italians use it to intro- duce a justification, add per- spective, soften a conclusion, or point out something that should already be obvious. T h e e x p r e s s i o n c o m e s from the phrase di altro onde, an older form mean- ing roughly "from another s i d e " o r " f r o m a n o t h e r source." Over time, it con- t r a c t e d i n t o d ' a l t r o n d e , becoming a single adverbial p h r a s e .
