The Syrian crisis: Italy condemns the slaughters, suggesting a political resolution. Pope calls for peace Continued from page 1 A declaration signed by eleven countries - among which Italy, US, France, United Kingdom and Spain - condemns the actions of the Syrian regime and calls for "a strong response" against violence, but it doesn't ratify the military action decided by the White House and opposed by Russia. Italy, as it was explained, highly values the alliance with the US but is "unable" to participate in military operations without the aegis of the UN because of Letta met with Obama and Putin its "juridical statute". Nevertheless, this doesn't mean that it doesn't condemn the use of chemical weapons or doesn't ask for such a crime to be punished." Prime Minister Enrico Letta stated that also President Putin should use "all the weapons at his disposal to find a positive solution", and that all countries should "seriously consider Pope Francis' plead for peace." Pope Francis prays for peace Recently, the Pope has addressed young people and followers of other religions on Twitter, urging them to pray for peace and announcing a day of fasting for a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict.
