Even in Rome or Pompeii a lot of artistic masterpieces are often abandoned or laying in ruins, but many other works of art of incalculable value are still to be found. This has just happened in Tarquinia, an Etruscan city in the province of Viterbo, 90 km far from Rome, well-known for its wonderful necropolises: 6,000 tombs, 200 of them decorated with marvelous wall paintings included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There, under the dust of time, archaeologists from the University of Turin have recently discovered a sepulcher dated 2,700 years ago, and unbelievably intact. Continued on page 15 Is Venice at risk because of cruise ships? VENICE - Almost 20 large vessels only last weekend. Maybe too many for the delicate equilibrium of the Venice Lagoon, yet so important for the economy of the city. For many years, the presence of cruise ships high as much as the San Marco bell tower off the Venetian waters have sparked protests from residents, environmentalists and politicians. In the aftermath of the Costa Concordia disaster (it emerged from the Tuscan Sea just last week thanks to a 500 million euros marine salvage), UNESCO appealed to the Italian government to stop cruise ships entering One of the big cruise ship entering Venice in front of San Marco bell tower the San Marco Basin and Giudecca Canal. Yet, even if the authorities agreed in principle, nothing has changed. On the one hand, large cruise ships pay around 50,000 dollars each time they moor, with almost 3,500 calls per year. On the other hand, the 2 million passengers who disembark from them every year spend their money in local restaurants, pubs, souvenirs, and shops. Nevertheless, the condition of the lagoon is cause for deep concern. Perché meravigliarsi se nel Paese delle eterne incompiute si scoprono, in meno di dieci anni di scavi, reperti preziosissimi come la Tomba del Principe Etrusco di Tarquinia che si è conservata intatta, inviolata, per ben 2700 anni? La cosa più straordinaria, ha detto il professore che conduce le ricerche, Alessandro Mandolesi, sta in un dettaglio: un vasetto ancora appeso al suo chiodo da quasi tre millenni. Incredibile, no? Ma in fondo, perchè stupirsi? Sì, perché sorprendersi sapendo che questo nostro Paese è una miniera di tesori di epoche e culture diversissime e ciascuna magnificente (Heritage pag. 9)? Ci si dovrebbe stupire solo di una cosa: dello scarso senso di protezione che il Paese ha nei confronti di questi suoi tesori preziosi. Tesori visitati da 20 milioni di turisti l'anno come succede a Venezia, che pure è minaccita dalle grandi navi che solcano il Canal Grande. Tesori che come a Pompei possono esser conservati solo se arriva una spedizione di salvataggio tedesca con un progetto decennale plurimilionario. Tesori che abbiamo venduto in epoche passate (certo allora c'era un'altra idea della cultura ma spesso i mercanti d'arte hanno fatto e fanno più danni di quanto non si creda) e oggi paiono più valorizzati all'estero che non in casa (pag 14). Eppure, la cultura può fare moltissimo per un Paese in termini di economia ma anche di alfabetizzazione, come dimostra l'idea semplice ma miracolosa di raggiungere villaggi sperduti con librerie ambulanti su muli e asinelli (Società e Attualità pag 5). Perché è paradossale scoprire che l'Italia, avanzatissima quando fa volare nello spazio navicelle senza pilota per raggiungere la stazione spaziale Iss (Dall'Italia pag 2), ha scuole che cadono a pezzi (pag 3) e non riesce a far emergere le sue risorse artistiche e creative (Red Carpet pag 12). La cultura è così importante per l'Italia perchè, con il turismo, è sicuramente la chiave per il rilancio economico ma soprattutto per la crescita verso "sorti magnifiche e progressive". Solo che bisogna iniziare a crederci veramente.
