" This was the incipit of Italian Premier Enrico Letta's speech addressed to the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York after his official visit to Canada and before the one to the USA. On October 16, President Letta at the "Opening bell" at New York Stock Exchange Barack Obama will welcome Enrico Letta to the White House on an official meeting to reaffirm the strong and long standing relationship between the two countries, one of the closest in Europe. President Obama and Prime Minister Letta will discuss the need to boost economic growth and create new job opportunities, Continued on page 15 The Italian government to confront another political crisis ROME - Another decisive week for the Italian government. As Enrico Letta's grand-coalition executive looks set to collapse after the resignation of some ministers from Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right party, the Italian Premier replies he will put the government to confidence vote in Parliament. If the government loses the confidence vote, the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano may give someone else a mandate to form a shortterm administration with only two tasks: passing the 2014 Budget Law - absolutely necessary to avoid economic sanctions from the EU -, and immediately reforming the electoral system so that a new vote can be held. This new turmoil is due to the tax-fraud verdict returned last month by the Supreme Court against three-time Premier Silvio Berlusconi. Last weekend, his People of Freedom (PdL) party closed the door to Letta's government, even if the party itself is now divided between doves who look to a solution and hawks who approve Berlusconi's hard line. Oltre 5.4 milioni di italiani sono immigrati negli Stati Uniti tra il 1820 e il 1992. In 172 anni hanno composto la quinta comunità etnica più numerosa. Per arrivare ai giorni nostri mancano altri 21 anni che sono stati accompagnati da nuove ondate, anche se meno abbondanti. Oggi si contano oltre 26 milioni di americani di origini italiane. Come dire che negli Stati Uniti vive la metà dell'attuale popolazione italiana. Ogni anno la presidenza degli Stati Uniti designa Ottobre come Italian American Heritage Month, un riconoscimento ufficiale ai tanti contributi che gli americani di discendenza italiana e gli italiani in Usa hanno portato e portano quotidianamente allo sviluppo e alle crescita del popolo americano. Perché essere fieri di questa eredità nella vita di tutti i giorni? Perché conservarla, tramadarne la lingua e la cultura, le tradizioni e il folklore, perché continuare a ternersi informati sul quel che succede nel Belpaese, conoscerne i monumenti, l'arte, il patrimonio che rende l'Italia un Paese unico? Perché non recidere il cordone ombelicale? In realtà il motivo è lo stesso per cui L'Italo Americano da 105 anni porta avanti non il giornale ma la lingua e la cultura italiana in un Paese che parla almeno 20 idiomi e vive realtà ben diverse da quelle della madrepatria. Se dimentichiamo le radici o non le conosciamo perdiamo un pezzo del nostro patrimonio genetico che poi, come insegnano le cellule staminali, ci arricchisce, ci reintegra, ci salva dall'appiattimento globalizzante, anche a distanza di decenni. Ecco perché in questo mese L'Italo Americano dedicherà tanta attenzione alla sezione Heritage (leggete pag 5, 8, 9) storica, culturale, sociale, senza dimenticare quanti contatti e scambi ci sono quotidianamente con l'attualità americana (pagina 3).
