The official visit highlighted the vitality of the relationship between the United States and Italy. "The bonds between our two countries - says the White House press release - are among the strongest tying together the United States and Europe". In the bilateral meeting in the Oval Office, they discussed promoting economic growth and new jobs, their support for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, cooperation within Nato, shared challenges in North Africa and the Middle East, and other issues. Economic growth and new jobs among the topics discussed by the two leaders Continued on page 15 Proposed amendment to Italian penal code to punish who denies Holocaust and massacres ROME - Italian President Giorgio Napo-litano endorsed the proposal to amend the Italian penal code in order to punish as a crime, puni-shable with a sentence of one to five years in jail, who would still deny the Holocaust. The amendment banning revisionism passed almost unanimously in the Italian Senate justice commission on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Nazi round up of Jews in Rome. A "crime that cannot be forgotten or forgiven" as Jewish leaders said at a ceremony in Israel, committed also against almost 1,000 Roman Jews 70 years ago. The case of the Nazi war crimi- President Giorgio Napolitano and and Pope Francis nal Erich Priebke, who recently died in Rome, is a reminder of the importance of memory, ad-ded Vito Anav, president of the Association of Italian Immigrants, during the ceremony at the Yad Vashem, Israel's official shrine of remembrance of the Holocaust. Priebke still said, at the age of 100 when he died, he was "only following orders" during the murder of 335 men and boys in Rome in 1944. È significativo che tra i temi toccati nell'incontro bilaterale alla Casa Bianca tra il Presidente americano Barack Obama e il Presidente del Consiglio italiano Enrico Letta, ci sia stato uno spazio apposito per il "Cultural Exchange and Heritage". Nell'Italian Heritage Month e nell'Anno della Cultura Italiana negli Stati Uniti, ha un significato decisamente particolare e simbolico, come questo incontro al vertice. Altrettanto significativi sono i dati emersi dall'incontro. Italia e America partecipano a un gran numero di programmi di scambio. L'Italia ospita circa 30,000 exchange students ogni anno ed è seconda solo alla Gran Bretagna come destinazione di studio all'estero per gli americani. La Fulbright Commission, che si occupa di scambi culturali ed educativi tra i due Paesi, è una delle più anziane e corpose in Europa. Dalla sua attivazione nel 1948, più di 10,000 studenti, docenti e ricercatori, italiani e americani, hanno beneficiato di una borsa di studio. I programmi di tirocinio e i business exchange hanno portato giovani manager e imprenditori a frequentare negli Usa corsi di studio accademici e stage aziendali nei vari campi scientifici e ingegneristici. Dal 2001 poi, Usa e Italia sono partner in accordi bilaterali per proteggere la proprietà culturale e prevenire i traffici illeciti di opere d'arte e tesori archeologici. Le due nazioni però, non stanno solo celebrando l'Anno della Cultura Italiana negli Usa con una lunga serie di mostre, conferenze, concerti, seminari che stanno dando agli americani (e non solo agli italoamericani) stimolanti occasioni di conoscere l'Italia attraverso l'arte, la storia, il design, l'innovazione scientifica e tecnologica. Stanno mostrando cos'è l'Italia oggi. La sua capacità di sviluppare energie innovative e utili a livello mondiale. Perchè l'Heritage non è solo passato ma quel che ha seminato il presente.
