Coffee wasn't invented in
Italy, but certainly Italy has cre-
ated such a unique and powerful
coffee culture that it would be
easy to think otherwise.
Imagine waking up in an
Italian house in the morning and
not drinking an espresso or a
cappuccino. It sounds like a hor-
ror/sci-fi movie where suddenly
the world is upside-down. Yet
we must accept that it was not
always so.

Dopo l'Unità d'Italia del
1861, c'è stata una grande
ondata migratoria che ha mas-
sicciamente interessato il conti-
nente americano. Il fenomeno
ha avuto inizio nelle regioni
settentrionali e si è poi esteso a
quelle del Mezzogiorno, da cui
si partiva costretti da condizioni
economiche assai precarie.
La Grande Emigrazione, tra
il 1880 e il 1924, ha portato
circa 5 milioni di italiani a
lasciare il loro paese, a sbarcare
a Ellis Island, nel porto della
città di New York, e a iniziare
un'avventura nel Nuovo Mondo
che per moltissimi si trattò di
una parentesi, spesso sfortuna-
ta, che si concluse con il ritorno
in patria. Questo grande flusso
si ridurrà a partire dagli anni
'20 del Novecento fino ad esau-
rirsi con la II Guerra Mondiale
