who hailed from Pietralcina, a
town in the same geographical
area.
I'm referring to the couple's
clear vision of their long-term
mission, to traverse together six
continents over a six-year span,
in order to spread the traditions
and values of their homeland,
historical area of "Samnium"
(today corres ponding to the
P rovince of Benevento,
Campania).
The latter in turn certainly is a
pilgrimage destination, visited by
flocks of pilgrims eager to see
Padre Pio's "sights," but also one
of the areas in Italy, with the
most heart-felt religious devo-
tion.

l primo Columbus Day fu cele-
brato nel 1792, ben 300 anni
dopo l'arrivo dell'esploratore
genovese nel continente america-
no. Allora Colombo non era nem-
meno italiano, perchè l'Italia,
sotto forma di regno affidato a
Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia,
arriverà solo nel 1861.
Nato nel 1451, marinaio della
Repubblica di Genova, divenne
suddito del Regno di Castiglia,
dove poi morì nel 1506 e dove
oggi c'è la casa in cui visse gli
ultimi anni in solitudine, quando
la corte gli aveva voltato le spalle.
