The Mayflower with 102 passengers aboard departed from Plymouth, England on Sep. 16, 1620. The US Constitution was signed in Philadelphia, P e n n s y l v a n i a o n S e p . 1 7 , 1787 by 39 delegates and r e p l a c e d t h e A r t i c l e s o f Confederation. Mickey Mouse starred in a cartoon shown for the first time on Sep. 19, 1928. Ferdinand Magellan left Spain with five ships on Sep. 20, 1519 to find a route to the Spice Islands. Goffredo Mameli was born in Genova in 1807. A soldier, journalist and poet, and director of the Genoese daily Diario del Popolo. C h r i s t o p h e r C o l u - mbus set sail on his second voyage to America on Sep. 25, 1493. Samuel Adams, a hero of the American revolution, was born Sep. 27, 1722 in Boston and was a "Boston Tea Party" leader. Enrico Fermi, a Nobel Prize winner in physics was born Sep. 29, 1901. *** H e c t o r B o i a r d i d i e d i n Parma, Ohio in 1985 at age eighty-seven. If the name d o e s n ' t r i n g a b e l l i t i s because you probably knew him best as Chef Boy-Ar-Dee. Hector Boiardi, a native of Piacenza, Italy, took a small apprentice job in Italy and turned it into big business in America. H e c t o r ' s b r o t h e r , P a u l Boiardi, began working in Italy as a hotel waiter in 1910 b e f o r e i m m i g r a t i n g t o America where he gained employment as a waiter at the Knickerbocker Hotel. He slowly moved to different locations until he became a waiter at the Plaza Hotel in 1917. When Hector became 17, Paul sent for him, and Hector began to work as a chef at the Plaza Hotel. From t h e P l a z a , h e w e n t t o t h e k i t c h e n s o f R e c t o r ' s , Claridge's, Ritz Carlton, and Hotel Greenbrier in West Virginia, where he directed the catering for President Woodrow Wilson's marriage reception. At age 24, Hector accepted an offer to take charge of a staff of forty cooks in the kitchen of the New Hotel Winton in Cleveland, Ohios, where in 1924, he opened his own restaurant, Il Giardino d'Italia. He's special spaghetti and tomato sauce made the restaurant an instant success. When patrons began asking for take-out portions, he saw an opportunity for expansion, f o u n d a d i s t r i b u t o r a n d started Chef Boiardi Food Products Company. H e c t o r p r e p a r e d t h e t o m a t o s a u c e i n a t h r e e - gallon vat and packaged it along with dry spaghetti and his special grated cheese. By the late 1930's, he had four processing plants and began to look for space closer to tomato growers. He found a l a r g e p l a n t i n c e n t r a l P e n n s y l v a n i a f a r m l a n d around Milton, and with his a s s o c i a t e s , f o u n d a n a b a n d o n e d s i l k m i l l . T h e i n t e r i o r o f t h e m i l l w a s t r a n s f o r m e d a n d l o c a l growers were given contracts for one thousand acres of tomatoes. O n e n i g h t , h e encountered Mr. and Mrs. John Hartford, owners of the great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P), the owners of the A&P chain. Paul gave Hartford a dish of spaghetti w i t h h i s b r o t h e r ' s s a u c e about which Hartford raved. Paul told him of Hector's products and his difficulties in getting chain food stores to carry them. Hartford said, "I'll see that they get into all A & P s t o r e s . " H e c t o r ' s products sold by the millions, and Paul quit the Plaza to become vice-president of his brother's business. W o r l d W a r I I b o o s t e d s a l e s e v e n m o r e . T h e A m e r i c a n a r m y n e e d e d packaged food that could be put into the backpacks of every soldier. To meet the demand, Chef Boy-Ar-Dee put its facilities at the service of the U.S. forces, and allies, packaging palatable ham and eggs for the troops. Because of his excellence in wartime p r o d u c t s , H e c t o r w a s presented the coveted "E" p e n n a n t b y t h e A r m y Quartermaster Corps in 1943. As the war was won, so were the Americans. Leading food processing company, A m e r i c a n H o m e F o o d s , bought Chef Boy-Ar-Dee and by 1946 had expanded the Milton plant, added research, administration and training d e p a r t m e n t s . W h a t w a s started by a young Piacenzan b o y b e c a m e a t h r i v i n g corporate enterprise and an American household name.
